Abiu is a tropical fruit tree originated in the Amazonian region of South America belonging to the family Sapotaceae. It can grow well in tropical climatic conditions. Abiu is also called by Yellow Star Apple and Blueberry Pie fruit.
Abiu is an ultra-tropical under-story tree, that performs well in Tropical and Sub Tropical climate and provided grown in a semi-shaded condition. The fruit is golden yellow when ripe and tastes like sweetened tender coconut with a mild flavor and aroma. When turned completely yellow, the fruit is ready for harvest and can be opened after a day or two, the soft tender flesh can be easily scooped and had directly or while chilled which tend to improve the eating experience.
Abiu Tree
Medium to a large tree in tropical areas with a pyramidal or oval canopy. The secondary and tertiary branches that emerge from the main limbs are generally willow-like (thin and long) and hang
downward when heavy with fruit. The tree tends to have a smaller canopy that attains a height of 12-15ft and spreads to a width of 15-20ft. The fruits are borne partly along their leaf axis and on the terminal ends and almost take 120 days from flower to ripened fruit. The tree starts flowering from its second years onwards even though they are not vegetative propagated. Ideal for both commercial and homestead painting.
Flowers
The flowers are borne singly or in clusters of 2–5 flowers in leaf axils on long, thin shoots. Flowers are hermaphroditic, small, 4- to 5-lobed, cylindrical, and white to greenish. Flowers open during the morning and may stay open for about 2 days.
Fruit
Ovoid to round commonly with a short nipple at the apex. The peel is smooth, tough, and pale to bright yellow when ripe. The pulp is white, translucent, jelly-like, mild-flavored, and sweet. There are 1–5 brown seeds. Fruit takes 100–130 days from flowering.
Growing Conditions
Among the Abiu varieties - Z1, Z2 and Z3 taste very good when compared to others.

Abiu Water Requirement
Abiu needs water, also it doesn't tolerate water logging conditions. Learn your soil behaviors, if the soil keep moisture more, water for every alternate days, otherwise water daily.
Age of Tree | Water requirement/day/Tree |
1 Years | 10 Liters |
2 Years | 15 Liters |
3 Years | 20 Liters |
4 Years | 25 Liters |
Pets & Disease
Most Abiu's are affected by Sucking pest types namely aphids, leafhoppers, thrips, whitefly, beetles and mites and Sooty Mould. To control sucking pests in abiu and from Scooty mould apply the below Pesticides.
